What is mechanically stabilized earth?
Mechanically stabilized earth is a constructed soil mass strengthened with layers of reinforcement. In an MSE wall, compacted selected fill, geogrid reinforcement, facing and drainage are coordinated so the components act as one engineered retaining system.
The final geometry and reinforcement arrangement must be designed for the project loading, foundation conditions, retained soil, water conditions, seismic requirements and applicable standards.
How does a geogrid retaining wall work?
Geogrid layers extend from the wall face into compacted reinforced fill. Interaction between the fill and reinforcement helps resist outward soil forces and creates a coherent reinforced zone behind the facing.
Reinforcement length, vertical spacing, connection, fill quality and compaction are interdependent. Changing one component without checking the complete design can affect wall performance.

Retaining wall drainage system
Surface water, groundwater and construction-stage water should be managed so pressure does not build behind the wall. Drainage provisions may include permeable aggregate, geotextile filtration, drainage composites, collector pipes and defined outlets depending on the approved design.
