WHAT IS GEOTEXTILE FABRIC?

A permeable layer that manages soil and water.

Geotextile is a permeable geosynthetic fabric used in contact with soil, rock or other civil engineering materials. Depending on its construction and specified properties, it can separate dissimilar layers, retain soil while allowing water flow, transmit water, add tensile support or protect an adjacent barrier.

In road construction, railways, drainage systems, embankments and erosion-control works, the geotextile becomes part of the complete ground system. Product selection must consider soil grading, hydraulic conditions, loading, survivability and installation—not a keyword or GSM value alone.

WOVEN VS NONWOVEN GEOTEXTILE

Woven geotextile is formed by interlacing yarns. Its construction is commonly associated with separation and reinforcement where tensile response is important.

Nonwoven geotextile fabric is made from fibres bonded mechanically, thermally or chemically. Its felt-like structure is commonly used for filtration, drainage, separation and protection. “Geofabric” is sometimes used as a general search term, but geotextile is the recognised engineering term.

What is geotextile fabric?+

Geotextile is a permeable textile used with soil, rock and other geotechnical materials. It forms part of an engineered civil construction system and can provide separation, filtration, drainage, reinforcement or protection.

What is geotextile fabric used for?+

Common uses include separating road-base aggregate from subgrade soil, filtering water while retaining soil particles, supporting drainage, protecting geomembranes, controlling erosion and reinforcing selected ground structures.

What is the difference between woven and nonwoven geotextile?+

Woven geotextiles are produced by interlacing yarns and are commonly selected where tensile reinforcement and separation are important. Nonwoven geotextiles are bonded fibre structures commonly selected for filtration, drainage, separation and protection. Final selection depends on the project design and required properties.

How is geotextile used in road construction?+

A geotextile layer may be placed between a weak subgrade and granular base to limit intermixing, maintain aggregate integrity and support filtration. The required fabric properties depend on soil, drainage, traffic and installation conditions.

Does geotextile allow water to pass through?+

Geotextiles are permeable, but hydraulic behaviour varies by product. For filtration, the selected opening size and permeability must permit water flow while limiting uncontrolled movement of the retained soil.

What is geotextile fabric made of?+

Geotextile fabric is commonly manufactured from polymer fibres or yarns such as polyester or polypropylene. The fibres may be woven into an ordered structure or bonded into a nonwoven fabric according to the required engineering function.
