Geogrids

A geogrid is an open polymer reinforcement structure made with connected ribs and apertures. Soil or aggregate interacts with the grid to create a more stable reinforced layer for roads, working platforms, slopes and retaining structures.

Geogrids are used for road-base reinforcement, weak-subgrade stabilisation, mechanically stabilised earth retaining walls, reinforced slopes, embankments, railway formations and load-transfer platforms.

Geogrids may be manufactured from polymers such as polyester, polypropylene, polyethylene or PVA. The appropriate geogrid material and manufacturing form depend on loading, strain, durability, soil interaction and environmental conditions.

Layers of geogrid extend from the wall facing into compacted structural fill. Interaction between the reinforcement and fill creates a coherent reinforced soil mass that resists outward earth forces as part of an engineered retaining-wall system.

In construction, geogrid is a geosynthetic reinforcement placed within soil or aggregate layers. It is used in road bases, weak subgrades, working platforms, embankments, reinforced slopes and retaining walls where the engineered system requires improved load distribution or tensile soil reinforcement.

Uniaxial geogrid develops its principal tensile capacity in one direction and is commonly considered for reinforced soil walls and slopes. Biaxial geogrid reinforces in two principal directions and is commonly considered for road construction, pavement bases and working platforms. Final selection depends on the project design.

Geogrid is an open planar grid that reinforces soil or aggregate through interaction with its ribs and apertures. Geocell is an expandable three-dimensional cellular system that confines infill. Both can support ground stabilisation, but their mechanisms and suitable applications differ.
